The effective tax rate is half the nominal corporate tax rate. Two-thirds of US corporations paid no tax. GE took a $3.2 billion corporate tax benefit. In World War II, corporations paid 50% more than individuals and families. By the time Reagan left office, individuals and families paid four times more. The jobs crisis is deep and structural.
The revenue and tax avoidance problem is cast as an overspending problem. Greedy teachers and firefighters are pilloried while speculators and financiers are called "system relevant" and ignored.
The myths of the self-healing market, free trade and benificient corporations must be unmasked. Otherwise we face the "end game of humanity" (Arundhati Roy), Noam Chomsky warned.
