Folk musicians from throughout Florida will gather on stage Sunday, Dec. 5th, lending their talents to a benefit concert for Anne Feeney, considered by many to be America’s foremost labor singer. Proceeds from the concert will help defray the mounting medical costs of Anne’s struggle against lung cancer.
The concert will begin at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ft. Lauderdale (3970 NW 21st Ave., Oakland Park). Suggested donation is $15, and tickets may be purchased at the door.
Appearing on the Dec. 5th program will be Ellen Bukstel, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, Ray Del Papa, Jennings and Keller, Rod MacDonald, Marie Nofsinger, the Raging Grannies, Joan Rose, the Solidarity Singers, Amy Speace, Amy Carol Webb, Doug and Telisha Williams, Valerie C. Wisecracker… and many more.
Anne Feeney is the granddaughter of a union organizer who used music to carry the message of solidarity to working people. After two decades of community activism and regional performances at rallies, Anne took her message on the road and has traveled to the frontlines in 42 states, as well as in Canada, Mexico, Denmark, Ireland and Sweden.
Her original activist anthem, "Have You Been to Jail for Justice?" is performed by social reformers everywhere, and was recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary. Dubbed the "minister of culture" to the movements for economic and social justice and human rights, Anne received the Joe Hill Award from the Labor Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC, joining former recipients Cesar Chavez and Pete Seeger, among others. Her critically acclaimed recordings are widely available.
Among the sponsoring organizations of the Ft. Lauderdale concert are the Broward Folk Club, CodePink South Florida, Evergaldes Earth First!, Florida Initiative for Electoral Reform (FLIER), Folk Club of South Florida, Greenpeace (PB County Activists), Miami for Peace and Justice, Night Heron Grassroots Activist Center, Palm Beach County Environmental Coalition (PBCEC), and Pax Christi St. Maurice.
