On Sunday afternoon, October 7th, South Florida activists gathered outside Wild Oats at 1020 Alton Road in Miami Beach to join Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, for the annual Walk for Farm Animals. Mr. Clucky and his pal Mark Buckley led the Miami Walk. This fun and inspiring celebration was duplicated in over 50 cities across North America. In addition to promoting awareness about inhumane factory farming practices, walkers raised much needed funds to help sustain and ensure farm animal rescue, protection and advocacy efforts.

Registered walkers, wearing their Walk for Farm Animals T-shirts, designed by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Berkeley Breathed, walked from Wild Oats Market to Lincoln Road, south to Espanola Way and over to Ocean Drive, then back to the starting point at Wild Oats, in a show of support urging compassion for farm animals.
Books & Books at 933 Lincoln Road provided a water station to the walkers and at 15th & Ocean Drive, Fusion Restaurant provided the walkers with free smoothies. A mini music concert by the reggae band "Made of Hemp" greeted walkers as they sign up for the Walk. Educational literature was available for those citizens who wanted to learn more about farm animal issues.
The "Walk for Farm Animals" focused attention on current Farm Sanctuary campaign issues. Animal cruelty is inherent in factory farming practices, like the force feeding of geese in the production of foie gras. Farm animals are crippled during their transport and auction (downed animals) and receive no veterinary care. Calves are confined in crates and gestation crates for pigs are so small they cannot turn around. Important legislative efforts and actions are now pending nationwide on these issues.
Heartfelt thanks go to Wild Oats & the reggae band "Made of Hemp" for their support. You can visit the band website at http://www.myspace.com/madeofhemp
About Farm Sanctuary
Farm Sanctuary is the nation's leading farm animal protection organization. Since incorporating in 1986, Farm Sanctuary has worked to expose and stop cruel practices of the "food animal" industry through research and investigations, legal and institutional reforms, public awareness projects, youth education, and direct rescue and refuge efforts. Farm Sanctuary shelters in Watkins Glen, N.Y., and Orland, Calif. provide lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals, who have become ambassadors for farm animals everywhere by educating visitors about the realities of factory farming.
