Civil Liberties, Independent Media and the Role of Universities in Preserving Freedom of Expression: Perspectives on "the Miami Model" and the Future of Progressive Coalitional Politics in South Florida. The conference will be held at the University of Miami School of Law in ROOM 352 starting at 8:30 am on Saturday, April 2nd, 2005. The Law School's street address is 1311 Miller Drive, Coral Gables, FL 33146.

The Center for Hispanic and Caribbean Legal Studies at the University of Miami School of Law in sponsoring this conference, brings together an impressive array of local community leaders, national legal scholars, lawyers, activists, artists, filmmakers, poets, photographers and includes significant participation of UM students, alumni and faculty -- all gathered to examine important issues of public policy arising out of the proposed FTAA agreement, constitutional rights implicated by the operational tactics used to police the ministerial meeting in November of 2003, media policy issues raised by the content and tenor of local news coverage before, during and after that event and issues relating to the role and status of attorneys involved in the representation of political dissidents.
