Martin Luther King Jr. was born Jan. 15, 1929. MLK Day is celebrated Jan. 17 this year. Here is a list of Broward events:

JAN. 13
• Fort Lauderdale -- Celebration for children ages 6-11 from 2-5 p.m., West Ken Lake Park, 1321 NW 33rd Ave. 954-791-1040.
• Lauderdale Lakes -- City hosts events Thursday through Jan. 17. 954-535-2785.
FRIDAY
• Coral Springs -- City hosts events, with Coral Springs Martin Luther King Jr. Committee and Citibank as sponsors, including business luncheon and community celebration with music, dance and drama. 954-344-1063.
• Fort Lauderdale -- Lafayette Hart Park, 2851 NW Eighth Rd., hosts celebration 3-5 p.m. for children ages 6-14. 954-791-1041.
• Hollywood -- Yolanda King, oldest child of Martin Luther King Jr., to give keynote address at city's celebration at 6 p.m. at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa, 3555 S. Ocean Dr. The theme, ''Making the Dream a Reality.'' Cost is $75. 954-921-3404.
• Pembroke Park -- A ''Let Freedom Ring Jamboree'' is 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Lake Forest Park, 3450 SW 48th Ave. There will be presentations, information on civil rights leaders, music, booths on historically black colleges, and games and prizes. 954-985-1915.

• Lauderhill -- Singer Harry Belafonte is featured speaker at the fifth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day program, 7 p.m. at Diamante's Banquet Center, 6501 W. Commercial Blvd., Lauderhill. Cost is $50 per person. 954-730-4218.
SUNDAY
• Davie -- Town's annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Picnic, 1-4 p.m. at Potter Park, 4300 SW 57th Ter.; free activities include climbing wall, bounce houses, petting farm, magic show. 954-797-1166.

• Dania Beach -- City's 18th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration starts 7 a.m. with free breakfast, parade at Collins Elementary School, 1050 NW Second St. 954-253-4393.
• Fort Lauderdale -- Events start 9 a.m. with parade at Holiday Park that proceeds along Sunrise Boulevard to Joseph C. Carter Park, 1450 W. Sunrise Blvd., where festival starts at noon. Fun includes cultural and music performances, a children's village, arts and crafts and food. 954-660-7603.
Also, the Rev. Mack King Carter of New Mount Olive Baptist Church is guest speaker at a prayer breakfast at YMCA, 408 NW 14th Ter., Fort Lauderdale; $30 cost benefits YMCA. 954-467-2444.
• Hallandale Beach: The l7th Annual MLK Parade & Festival, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., starts at Northwest Ninth Street and Second Avenue, ends at OB Johnson Park at Eighth Avenue and Pembroke Road. Free amusement rides for children, live music by Loyalty, Pretty Ricky & The Mavericks, Lionel Jackson & Men With Vision, and Eloquence: The Band.
