May Day was reestablished in Miami Florida with pizazz with a song by the Raging Grannies on Friday as over 300 people representing a broad coalition of labor and immigrant rights groups marched down Brickel Avenue, n the heart of the city’s financial district. The lead banner read demanded “Bail Out People Not the Banks.” Other signs and banners declared, “Capitalism Sucks,” “Support the Employee Free Choice Act,” and “Legalization for Immigrants Now.”

The second annual "All Power to the Imagination!" Conference in Sarasota, Florida on April 24th - 26th is being organized by the New College Infoshop/Radical Alliance. The focus is on attempting to bridge the gap between “radical theory and practice.”

Miami's Bayfront Park will host "Miami Goin’ Green", an eco-friendly, Earth Day celebration on Saturday April 25, 2008. The Earthday Event will encourage people to reduce, reuse and recycle. The event is scheduled to run from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will offer live entertainment, hands-on activities for the entire family and close to 80 green exhibitors.

In more than 140 countries, May 1 is celebrated as a workers' holiday. May Day started in the U.S. in 1886 when American labor organizations called a general strike, beginning on May 1, to demand the eight-hour workday. On May 4, 1886, Chicago police opened fire on the strikers in what is known as the Haymarket Massacre. Today we celebrate May Day, or International Workers' Day, in honor of the Haymarket martyrs and the international working class. It is a day when workers throughout the world take to the streets to fight against exploitation.
